CARABETIKO

It was in 2014 that Maria Spyroglou and Christos Sarantidis founded Cabaretiko. Both based in Brussels, they fell in love with rebetiko at a very young age and have since practiced this music of the 20s, 30s and 40s, considered Greek blues. They then collaborated with different musicians, notably Nikos Prosilias who joined the group a few years ago. Guitar teacher, in this project he plays soloist on the bouzouki with oriental-sounding covers of the rebetiko of Athens and Smyrna and composers of the time, such as Manolis Hiotis, Panagiotis Tountas, etc. formerly performed by Roza Eskenazi. Andreas Mantzaris adds a deep rhythm on the piano which mixes with the sure rhythm of the rebetic guitar of Christos Sarantidis, all carried by the sunny and captivating voice of Maria. Giorgos Babanis, an experienced accordionist, was also invited to join the project where he accompanies the group with his long, languorous notes. Since April 2024, the presence of virtuoso violinist Riad Abdel-Gawad has made it possible to add songs influenced by Egypt to the repertoire. Maria Spyroglou, born in Brussels she has always been immersed in Greek music, that of her origins. Very young, she listened to Roza Eskenazi, Markos Vamvakaris, Rita Ampatzi… She named the group Cabaretiko in order to be able to also interpret Greek songs from another period or from the Greek diaspora but keeping a link with rebetico.

« Rebetiko is a popular form of musical and cultural expression in Greece directly associated with song and dance. It emerged in the 1920s following the arrival on the Greek mainland of waves of mainly Greek migrants expelled from Asia Minor (the Great Disaster). In 2017, rebetiko was added to UNESCO's lists of intangible cultural heritage. » (Wik.)
